A concrete driveway is more than a poured slab. It needs proper ground preparation, reinforcement, concrete placement, and joint planning. In Houston, the soil makes these steps especially important. Much of the area sits on Beaumont Formation clay, or “black gumbo.” Its Plasticity Index can reach 40-60, well above the 15 level considered expansive. With Houston receiving around 50 inches of rain a year, the clay can swell and shrink significantly.

We remove and haul off the old concrete, then correct what is underneath. Forms go in next, drainage falls are set, and reinforcement is placed and tied before any concrete arrives on site.

A new pour and a replacement are the same job with one extra step at the front, and the step everyone underestimates is what happens after the old slab is gone. Once we break out and haul away the failed concrete, we look at the ground it was sitting on, which is almost always where the original problem lived: fill that was never properly compacted, an eroded void, a tree stump cavity, or an old utility trench backfilled with the same clay that moves.
Correcting that is what buys you the years. We excavate to the depth the job needs rather than skimming the surface, condition the moisture in the ground before compacting it in even layers, and bring in select fill where the native clay is unsuitable to build directly on. The aim is uniform support, so the clay lifts and drops the whole slab together instead of bending it.
Not every driveway needs to come out, and we will tell you when yours does not. Isolated cracking, one settled panel, surface spalling, or joints that have opened and packed with debris can often be repaired in place, and the deciding factor is whether the base under that section is still stable. Resurfacing is the next step up and suits a driveway that looks rough but feels solid underfoot: an overlay restores the surface and gives you the chance to add a decorative finish at the same time.
We hold a firm line here, though, because an overlay copies whatever it is bonded to. We will not resurface over deep structural cracking or a slab that is still moving, since that means paying twice for the same driveway. Widening is the third request we get constantly, particularly across the 1950s and 1960s ranch houses in southwest Houston that were built with a single-width drive for one car.
All concrete cracks, and any contractor who says otherwise has not worked on clay, so what we control is where it cracks and whether it stays tight and hidden. Control joints are deliberate lines of weakness that give the slab a planned place to relieve stress, and properly placed control joints direct where concrete cracks so it stays hidden and structurally sound rather than wandering across the middle of the surface.
Our team plans joints around the driveway’s geometry, accounting for corners, narrow sections, and width changes where stress concentrates. We also set the proper slope during forming to direct Houston’s heavy rainfall away from your garage, foundation, and neighboring lots, adding trench or channel drains where grade alone cannot provide adequate drainage.
Houston front yards are flat and open, which makes the driveway the largest visible surface on most properties. A decorative finish is the same structural job underneath with a considered surface on top, and every option below has to be decided before we pour, because pattern, colour, and border transitions are built into the placement itself.
Not as a structural fix, no. A thin new layer poured over old concrete will not bond reliably, and it copies whatever the slab below it does, so any movement or cracking comes back through. A bonded decorative overlay is a different thing and works well, but only where the existing slab is sound and sitting level. If the base under your current driveway has failed, the old concrete has to come out and the ground beneath it has to be corrected first.
Usually not on the driveway itself, so plan for street parking or a neighbour’s space during the working days and the period before the slab will carry a vehicle. We can often phase a larger driveway so one side stays usable, and on properties with rear or side access we look at whether the garage stays reachable. Tell us at the site visit if losing access is a problem and we will build the sequence around it where the layout allows.
Sometimes, and it is a conversation we would rather have before the estimate than during the tear-out. Roots that have already lifted the slab need dealing with, but cutting major structural roots on a mature live oak can put the tree at risk, so the answer is not automatically yes. Options include shifting the driveway edge slightly, adjusting the base build in that zone, or accepting a joint positioned where movement is likely. That is almost certainly hot tyre pickup. Soft acrylic sealers soften in Houston heat, and a warm tyre parked on the surface lifts the film away, leaving darker marks in the shape of the contact patch. It is a sealer problem rather than a concrete problem, and the fix is stripping and resealing with a product suited to a driveway rather than a patio. Choosing the right sealer at the start avoids it, which is why we do not simply pick the glossiest one available.
Yes, and those two fixed points are why a driveway cannot be graded however we like. The slab has to meet your garage threshold cleanly without letting water run inside, and it has to meet the street or apron without a lip that scrapes bumpers. Everything between them is where the fall gets worked out, and on a short or steep Houston drive, that leaves less room than people assume. We take those levels at the site visit, because they shape the drainage plan for the whole job.
Some driveways need to come out. Plenty of others need one panel fixed, a resurface, or nothing at all yet.
